This inauguration day begins the task of unraveling a myriad of problems that have come to the fore in 2009. Previously, I’ve outlined a number of things to watch out for. The embedded PBS documentary below, however, does an excellent job reviewing how we got here. It starts with establishing a common understanding on monetary policy and rapidly accelerates clear through the troublesome complex financial “innovations”:
The solutions necessary to proceed will require not only superficial stimulus. There are serious and deep issues with how the creation of value has come to be rewarded. The growth of the financial sector over the past several decades will have to be carefully scrutinized – what of that prosperity created was real and what was sophisticated number trickery?
In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame.
